Marge Monko

Multidisciplinary artist based in Tallinn, Estonia

Marge Monko (b. 1976) is an artist and filmmaker who lives and works in Tallinn. She holds an MA in Photography from the Estonian Academy of Arts (2008) and has also studied at the University of Applied Arts Vienna. From 2013 to 2015, she participated in the two-year studio programme at the Higher Institute for Contemporary Art (HISK) in Ghent, Belgium. From 2017 to 2025, Monko was Professor of Photography at the Estonian Academy of Arts.

Her works are held in the collections of several international institutions, including MUMOK – Museum of Modern Art in Vienna, Muzeum Sztuki in Łódź, Poland, FRAC Lorraine in France, Fotomuseum Winterthur, and the Art Museum of Estonia. In 2012, she received the Henkel Art.Award, which is dedicated to artists from Central and Eastern Europe.

Monko has participated in numerous international artist residencies, including ISCP (International Studio & Curatorial Program) in New York (2015), KulturKontakt Austria in Vienna (2016), Para Site in Hong Kong (2017), and Videobrasil in São Paulo (2018).

Her most significant exhibitions in recent years include solo and group exhibitions at Kumu Art Museum (2026), Museum Folkwang in Essen (2024), Times Museum in Guangzhou (2024), the National Museum of Contemporary Art Athens (EMST) (2023), the University Museum of Contemporary Art (MUAC) at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) in Mexico City (2022), and Kai Art Center in Tallinn (2021). Her films have been screened at venues and events including Tallinn Photomonth, Tate Modern, and the artists’ film programme of Glasgow International.
